And.....we're done. All good things must come to an end. The only thing we had yet to get to was the fish ponds. Bumpa and Aime had given the kids a Spider-Man and Barbie fishing pole so we got the appropriate tackle and headed out for some catch and release. Mid-day sun and some pretty wary fish resulted in a slow start but Uncle Mark decided to try one of the smashed doughballs that were being snatched up ferociously by fish and Cassie. The slaying had begun. A few trout and largemouth, a couple bluegill were landed successfully. One large trout was lost at the dock when he threw the hook. Our final fish was a pretty good size catfish that Uncle Mark brought to the end of the dock. I laid on my belly, prepared to bring it in when Uncle Mark offered the warning "watch out for the spike". Being only a quasi-redneck and a Crocodile Hunter fan this phrase resulted in enough hesitation to allow the catfish to snap the line. When the heck did catfish mutate into some Terminator T3-esque predator? Guy duties of bug-killer, late night noise checker, hook baiter, etc.: accepted. Catfish spike avoider....nuh-uh.
